Day One: God Identifies His people
Sermon Point: As Joshua and the people of Israel were about to enter the Promised Land, God reminded them of the covenant He made with Abraham 400 years earlier, the sign of which was circumcision. Israel had neglected to circumcise their boys during their entire wilderness wandering, so it was necessary for this next generation to be identified as God’s own children before they marched on the Promised Land. This was the first reminder that would prepare them spiritually for all that God had in store for them; it was a physical mark of being in a relationship with the God of heaven and earth.
On this side of the cross, under the New Covenant, we also have a sign that marks us as God’s children: water baptism. Baptism is an outward sign of inward grace that manifests itself through faith. If you’re born again, you are one of God’s children – remembering your baptism is a great way to strengthen your faith, because it reminds you that you belong to God!
Truth: Acts 2:38-39 says, “Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off – for all whom the Lord our God will call.’”
Reflection: Have you been born again? Have you been water baptized? Whether as an infant, a child, or an adult, if you are now born again, let the remembrance of your baptism build and strengthen your faith as you continue to make disciples!
Response: Listen to this song. If you are born again and have been baptized, praise God that you belong to Him! If you have not yet been baptized, consider reaching out to David or Cammie to talk to them about taking that obedient next step of faith.
