In the backpacking world, there is a group of hikers called ‘thru hikers’ – they travel far and travel fast. And they all suffer from the same obsession – shed every last unnecessary ounce of weight. They do everything they can to travel light. From God’s vantage point as disciples, we are ‘through hikers’ in this life. And Jesus, it seems, shares the same obsession. In Matthew 11 Jesus tells us this – 28 “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Jesus, in essence, tells us that to travel with Him is to ‘travel light.’ Sounds good, doesn’t it? But for many - as great as it sounds, it seems equally impossible to actually do. What if many of the burdens that weigh us down God never intended us to carry?
We are excited about the new Sunday sermon series starting September 10th that we are calling Travel Light. We believe God will use this series to help many recognize and shed burdens and baggage that have weighed them down for far too long. Join us as we get wisdom from God on how to understand and handle frustration, disappointment, anxiety, destructive patterns and hurts without hauling them around or allowing them to weigh us down.
